You can download and print it for free! However, this book has 905 pages, which make it expensive to print! This is the first edition of this book (as a PDF), and I will do my best to publish next editions regularly.

Online Book: Power BI From Rookie to Rockstar

About the book; Quick Intro from Author

In July 2015, after the first release of Power BI Desktop, I’ve been encouraged to publish a Power BI online book through a set of blog posts. The main reason to publish this book online, was that with the fast pace of updates for Power BI Desktop, it is impossible to publish a paperback book, because it will be out dated in few months. From that time till now, I’ve been writing blog posts (or sections) of this book almost weekly in RADACAD blog. So far, I have more than 60 sections wrote for this book. The book covers all aspects of Power BI; from data preparation, to modeling, and visualization. From novice to professional level, that’s why I called it Power BI from Rookie to Rock Star.

You can start reading this book with no prerequisite. Each section can be read by itself, normally you don’t need to follow specific order. However, there are some sections, that need an example previously built in another section. These sections have a prerequisite section mentioning this requirement.

After a year and half of writing online, I decided to release this book as a PDF version as well, for two reasons; First to help community members who are more comfortable with PDF books, or printed version of materials. Second; as a giveaway in my Power BI training courses. Feel free to print this book and keep it in your library, and enjoy. This book is FREE!

This book will be updated with newer editions (hopefully every month), so you can download the latest version of it anytime from my blog post here:

Because I’ve been writing these chapters and sections from mid-2015, there are some topics or images or sections out dated with new changes in Power BI. I will do my best to update any changes in next few editions. However, to keep you informed; There is a date at the beginning of each section under the header that mentioned the publish date of that section.

  • Thank you very much for the book, really appreciate it 🙂

Will it be okay if I use some of the image, perhaps for my presentation? I’ll reference the book of course, making sure the credit goes to the right person 🙂

  • Hi Reza
Many thanks for what looks like a great book – I am looking forward to getting into it.
One thing I was hoping for was some guidance on creating custom visuals (I have some particular requirements for 3 axes line/bar charts, and for RAG KPI visuals). The book mentions this will be covered in future posts – do you know when they might be available, or do you know of other resources to help with this?
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Hi,
I have a ‘large’ spreadsheet, with one row per record, and many thousands of rows.
I want to create a report with one page per record (ie it wil be many thousands of pages long).
I’m not allowed to use Crystal Reports at work; Word mail-merge is too limited.
Can Power BI do ‘proper’ reports like this, or does it just do pretty dashboards, graphs and visualisations ?

    • Hi Martyn,
You can create a table or matrix visual as you want, even with many records in Power BI.
However, you don’t have control for printing that. Best would be using tools such as SSRS for such requirement.
      Cheers
      Reza
