Power BI Architecture – Sydney 2022 – Training Course

Power BI Architecture Training

Power BI Rookie to Rock Star

Sydney 7th and 8th of November 2022

Who is this training for?

This training is designed for Power BI Developers, Data analysts, Power BI architects, Data architects, BI Developers, and anyone who is building or designing a Power BI solution or implementation. To attend this training, you don’t need to know about Power Query, M, or DAX. However, a general basic understanding of Power BI will be helpful, although it is not mandatory. Regardless of your role with the Power BI solution, you will need to understand how Power BI components work together and what is the best way to combine them to achieve a solution that requires less maintenance and supports governance across your company.

What is included in the training?

In this training, you will learn about architecting the strategy of a Power BI solution from end to end. This is not training about development. So you won’t learn how to create a visualization or write DAX expressions. You will, however, learn about all aspects of architecture for a Power BI solution.

In this training, you will learn about Power BI Service and different connection types in Power BI and choose the right type of connection for your solution. You will also learn all the different ways of sharing a Power BI Solution and the pros and cons of each. The course continues with a detailed discussion about row-level security. You will learn how gateway configuration and setup will be in the whole package. You will also learn about integrating Power BI with other tools and some architecture blueprints to follow when designing a Power BI solution.

At the end of this training, you will be able to design the architecture of Power BI for your requirement; you can choose the right way of sharing and designing the gateway configuration as well as the communication of Power BI with other tools and services. You will be able to answer any questions that come to your mind about a solution architecture in the Power BI world and make the right decision to choose the right strategy for Power BI usage in your organization.

What would you receive as an attendee;

  • Two-day training course on Power BI Architecture
  • A copy of the Pro Power BI Architecture book
  • Access to the video course on Power BI Architecture
  • All the files, handouts, and materials for the course
  • Certificate of attendance

The training includes but is not limited to the topics below:

Table of contents:

  1. Development Architecture

There are many aspects of the architecture for a Power BI solution from the development point of view. It starts with what type of connection (Import, Live connection, or Direct Query) you need to choose and what hybrid scenarios are. Then it continued learning about Datamarts, Dataflows and shared datasets and the architecture for multi-development. Some aspects might be related to big data and performance, which requires architecture design. This part of the course includes but is not limited to;

  • Import Data
  • DirectQuery
  • Live Connection
  • Composite Mode
  • DirectQuery to Power BI Dataset
  • Choosing the right connection type
  • Dataflow
  • Shared Dataset
  • Datamart
  • Multi-Developer architecture
  • Dataflow vs. Dataset vs. Datamart
  • Analyze in Excel and Thin reports
  • Development tools
  • Dataset types
  • Paginated reports
  • Power BI templates
  • Incremental Refresh
  • Hybrid tables
  • Aggregations
  1. Deployment Architecture

Power BI supports multiple ways of deploying applications, each of which comes with pros and cons and best practices to consider. This part of the course focuses on things that you need to consider when you publish your solutions and the structure of the environment in which the content gets deployed. This part of the course includes but is not limited to;

  • Power BI Service
  • Power BI Report Server
  • Gateway
  • Power BI Licensing
  • Power BI Premium
  • Premium settings and configurations
  • Tenant settings
  • Metrics and admin reports
  • Workspace structure and architecture
  • Workspace roles
  • Deployment pipelines
  • REST API for deployment and administration
  • Tools for deployment and administration
  • XMLA endpoint
  1. Sharing and security

Learning the right way to share the Power BI content is critical. Power BI uses many different methods of sharing. A proper architecture might use multiple sharing methods. It is important to learn the pros and cons of each method and understand what method works best for your implementation. This chapter includes but is not limited to:

  • Governance
  • Individual object sharing
  • Workspace as a collaborative environment
  • Power BI Apps
  • Embed code and Publish to Web
  • Embed in SharePoint online
  • Teams and Office Integration
  • Power BI Embedded
  • Comparing sharing methods
  • Usage metrics
  • Row-level security
  • Dynamic Row-level security
  • Object-level security
